bio
Originally from Utah and now based in Berlin, Sydney Christensen is a sound artist, composer, and researcher exploring the intersections of sound, environment, and ecologies. After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Sonic Arts and Music Production from Portland State University, she relocated to Berlin to pursue her master’s degree at Universität der Künste in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts. Her studies have cultivated numerous collaborative and personal projects, shaping a practice consisting of environmental research, sociopolitical ecologies, social justice, and listening activism. She remaps artistic roots in decolonization and indigenous beliefs, maintaining that art can foster advocacy against colonial structures embedded in capitalism.
Drawn to remote and vast landscapes, Sydney’s work thrives through site-specific projects guided by her theoretical approach. With a passion for sound exploration through fieldwork, she engages with natural soundscapes, allowing environments to speak on their own terms. Through immersive sound projects, she reimagines ways of engaging with spaces and narratives, including those silent. Centering intentional listening as a form of activism, honoring the sonic character of each place is integral to her practice.
Alongside her creative work, Sydney serves as Vice President of the indie record label Kill Rock Stars, where she has worked for the past eight years. Although both her career and research are rooted in sound, they occupy two distinct compartments in her life.
